World No. 2 Rafael Nadal captured the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell trophy for the seventh time on Sunday as he defeated fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 7-6(1), 7-5 in the final. He was contesting his 69th tour-level final and won his 48th title.
It is the fourth time that Nadal has beaten Ferrer in the final of this ATP World Tour 500 clay-court tennis tournament. He has won his past 34 matches at the event and lifted the trophies from 2005-2009 and 2011-2012.
**Rafael Nadal has won his second men’s singles title of 2012, winning his seventh career crown in Barcelona. He thereby claimed his 48th career men’s singles tournament title, which sees him equal Ilie Nastase in 10th place all-time.**
"It's almost unimaginable to win here seven times," said Nadal. "It's a special tournament for me, at home in my club. To win at home in front of the people you know is always more special. I played at a very high level to win in Monte-Carlo and now Barcelona without losing a set, but I've been playing at a high level from the beginning of the year starting in Australia.
"The emotions are always high, but probably each year they get a bit higher as you are one year older and you don't know how many chances you are going to have left."
"It was a very equal match," reflected Nadal. "He didn't let me play my best level in the first set. I feel sorry for David and hope he can win here one day because he deserves it. Of course I am very happy to win two titles in a row and to start the clay court season like this."
"I had chances in both sets; he played better in the important moments," conceded Ferrer. "It's always hard to lose a final, but especially today it's hard because of the way it happened. It came down to small details, but Rafa deserved it.
"Overall I'm happy with my week. I played my best match of the week today, but to win against Rafa I had to do more. I played a bit too conservatively on the set points in the first set. It's difficult to lose my fourth final. It was a very good tournament for me."

Defending champion Rafael Nadal recorded his 25th match win of the season Friday, dismissing fifth seed Janko Tipsarevic 6-2, 6-2 in the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell quarter-finals.
The World No. 2 won 81 per cent of his second serve return points to break the eighth-ranked Tipsarevic five times, wrapping up his third straight victory over the Serbian in 83 minutes. He faltered just once on serve, in the fourth game of the second set, as he improved to a 33-1 event record.
"I felt well. I played a very good match, better than yesterday," said Nadal. "Very happy to be back in the semi-finals.You cannot expect an easy match against the No. 8 in the world. 6-2, 6-2 is a very good result for me."
The 25-year-old Nadal has not lost at the ATP World Tour 500 clay-court event since 2003, and has lifted the trophy on his past six appearances (2005-2009, 2011). He entered the tournament on the back of his eighth consecutive triumph at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters (d. Djokovic), where he collected his record-breaking 20th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown.
"I have a lot of confidence from my past results here but it doesn't mean it will continue that way," Nadal said. "Each match is different. I go on court and try my best in every moment and hope it goes well for me."
In the semi-finals, Nadal will play No. 9 seed Fernando Verdasco. The 2010 titlist led Kei Nishikori 4-2 before the eighth seed retired with an abdominal injury.
Verdasco is looking to win his first title since tasting victory in Barcelona two years ago. He finished runner-up to David Ferrer in Acapulco.
The Spaniard will aim to collect his first win in 13 meetings with Nadal.

- Rafa Nadal is through to the quarterfinals after defeating Robert Farah, 6-2, 6-3. He will play Janko Tipsarevic in the third match on Pista Central on Friday. The first match starts at 12:30 p.m. local time, 11:30 a.m. BST, 6:30 a.m. EST.
World No. 2 Rafael Nadal held off a spirited challenge from Robert Farah on Thursday, beating the Colombian qualifier 6-2, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.
The Spaniard has not lost a match at the ATP World Tour 500 clay-court tournament since 2003 and improved to a 32-1 event record as he defeated Farah in 86 minutes. World No. 246 Farah rallied from an early break down in the second set, but was broken twice more as Nadal swept to victory.
The 25-year-old Nadal has won the title on his past six visits to Barcelona, defeating David Ferrer in last year’s final. The Mallorcan is coming off his 20th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 victory at last week’s Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, where he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final, and has a 24-3 match record on the season.
The top-seeded Nadal goes onto face fifth-seeded Serbian Janko Tipsarevic, who dismissed Portugal’s Frederico Gil 6-2, 6-2 in 69 minutes. The Serb has lost both his past two meetings with Nadal, including once on clay, and is bidding to reach his third ATP World Tour semi-final of the season.
